instance
instance is a telematic music-dance duo piece that exists digitally between Vancouver and Cape Town. The telematic interface has been extended to enable the performers, Sumalgy Nuro and Lucy Strauss to co-creatively play a multi-user Digital Dance Musical Instrument (DDMI) over the internet, using music and dance.instance grew from the need for a real-time, collaborative performance practice during Covid-19 lockdowns and travel restrictions in 2020, and features elements of composition by both performers, and is constructed from the sonic worlds of viola and mbira, the spirit of Nyungwe people from Mozambique by the coast of the Zambezi river. instance was presented publicly in a live-streamed performance on the 30th of August, 2020.
instance was created in collaboration with Kıvanç Tatar. The performance is part of a project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
